Fantasy literature offers another way of seeing the world, and the mythical hope that it conjures builds a mythology in which utopian desires find their place. "Live as if the freedoms you desire were yours already. Only by refusing the constraints that are imposed can they be broken"--this is also true of imagining another life, making a new world.
I believe that illustration is an integral part of this process, for if done well, it distils and focuses the power of the story in question into a single, eyecatching and memorable image. It conveys the spirit of the tale, making it come alive for its viewers.
